On Tuesday, November 4, Jon Faddis recorded "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Bennett Studios in Englewood, New Jersey.
Jon has had the privilege of playing our national anthem on a number of occasions; it is always an honor to perform it, whether to open a White Sox game in Chicago, to close the Newport Jazz Festival, to honor cadets at West Point, or to share, on Jazz tours in concerts around the world, more of what makes us proud to be Americans and to be part of this larger world.
Yet performing "The Star-Spangled Banner" on this November 4 was particularly special, for many reasons.
Jon Faddis, together with director Gail Levin, cameraman Ben Shapiro, artist-illustrator Steve Brodner, and Richard O'Connor and the animation team at Asterisk, created a piece - "Coda" - to commemorate it.
We hope you will enjoy "Coda" - while a coda is the concluding passage of a piece or movement of music (and in this case, a series of extraordinary election-related animations, "The Naked Campaign," on The New Yorker and Sundance Channel), here and now, it represents the beginning of so very much.

Coda, featuring Jon Faddis on trumpet
(For all of you trumpet aficionados, Jon's performance of our national anthem is simply him; the music is not mixed or mastered, but represents a straight-ahead single take, coupled at the end with part of President-Elect Barack Obama's speech on election night.)
You can also find "Coda" on YouTube, AOL, The New York Times News Service/Syndicate, and a number of other sites.
More information about this will be posted in the near future.
Special thanks to Dae Bennett at Bennett Studios.
On this Tuesday, November 11, Veterans Day, and always, special thanks to all who serve and those who support them in those efforts.
